Last night was the premiere of NBC’s bold move to put Jay Leno on at the 10pm hour every day of the week in the fall season.
Now, I’m not a regular watcher of late night TV. I usually have so many other things to watch and catch up on with my DVR that I do not really watch with any regularity. There are times where I will watch and I do enjoy the banter of those late night talk show hosts. I don’t really think that I would be interested in watching it every night, especially when there are so many other things on (and that will be recorded) that I would want to watch.
As I watched last night I remember thinking how brave of Jay Leno to give up his late night spot and take on the 10pm time slot. The pressure to really get ratings is high in that hour. Fail, and your show is canceled and you already gave up your late night seat. It’s a bold move for NBC too, so it will be interesting to see if it pays off.
Last nights show didn’t really seem any different from what he did in his later hour. It was fun to watch and I was interested in the very awkward moment when Kanye West was sitting on the “hot seat” so to speak. It was fun to watch, but again on other nights with so many shows on I probably won’t be tuning in. If I record it I will keep it to watch when I run out of things to view, or if there is a guest star I am most interested in hearing from.
According to last nights ratings at PIfeedback.com, so far so good. Jay Leno average approx 18.4M viewers (final numbers) with 5.1/13 ratings share among the 18-49 crowd. It is important to note , however, that Jay Leno was up against repeats of ‘Three and A Half Men’ and the ‘Big Bang Theory’. Tonight he goes up against the season finale of Big Brother 11 (the second hour of the two hour finish) and he faces some stiffer competition in the coming weeks with shows like ‘The Good Wife’ , ‘CSI NY’ , ‘Private Practice’ etc.
‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘ One Tree Hill’ both had their season openers , but the numbers were disappointing. However, they did win the demo of woman.
‘America’s Got Talent’ averaged 13.89M viewers. My personal picks for potential winners of that show are Recycled Percussion, the dancing sisters, the opera singer or the funny old lady. The one act I can see having an entire dedicated Vegas show though is Recycled Percussion.
There wasn’t much to discuss about Sunday’s TV and ratings. It is official, however, that ‘Defying Gravity’ has disappeared from the schedule. It aired it’s 8th episode to embarrassingly low ratings. There were 5 more left, but whether we will ever see them remains to be seen. Probably when our regular season is in hiatus they will burn off the remaining episodes. Very sad, I truly like that show.
To close my blog today I have to say how sad of Patrick Swayze’s passing. I feel for his wife of 33 years whose heart must be broken. He was an awesome actor and his roles will stay with me, particularly his role in ‘Dirty Dancing’ and ‘Ghost’. May you rest in peace.
